Renewable Times - High Price For Nuclear Power

Dan Roscoe, April 09/09 - The energy industry, environmentalists, climate experts and the public have long argued over the pros and cons of Nuclear Power. Most recently, many people, including prominent environmentalists, have supported Nuclear Power as a required part of the solution to combat climate change. Now, a new report has come out, providing the most detailed publically available cost estimates for new nuclear generation. And the numbers are staggering.

The report entitled Business Risks and Costs of Nuclear Power calculates the total generation costs for new Nuclear electricity at 25-30cents/kWh. Currently in Nova Scotia, the standard residential rate is 12cents/kWh. If nuclear proliferation and radioactive waste that lasts 10,000 years weren’t enough to avoid nuclear power, then paying 2-3 times what you currently pay for power must be.

Luckily, Nova Scotia has had a moratorium on Uranium exploration since the 80’s, and despite recent pleading by the mining industry, it looks like it will stay that way. Lets just hope importing Nuclear Power from New Brunswick isn’t part of the upcoming Energy Strategy.
